Big Bang Taeyang’s official 2nd album “RISE” was released rather late. Last year, Seungri, G-dragon, Top released their song in order. Actually, Taeyang’s solo album was planned first, but it was released later than other members’ albums as a result. It’s been 7 months since “RINGA LINGA” and 4 years since his first full length album “SOLAR.”
He might feel uncomfortable about being late. On June 1, Taeyang tweeted, “Finally, tomorrow. My second album that I had worked for 4 years will be released on tomorrow. It was a long journey to make 9 songs. I worked harder to snatch at every moment. I hope this album would be loved by more and more people for my fans and music that might have waited for a long time. Thank you for waiting me with support and love. I wish my music and songs can be a comfort to all of you. LOVE”
Fans have high expectations of his new album as they have waited for a long time. Because of his previous albums and performance, his new album is expected to have high quality. Taeyang plays a key role in Big Bang’s music. Can we just put Taeyang as one of Big Bang’s member? There are always a member who stands out from other members. That’s what Taeyang does. Taeyang is a singer who shows an evolution of idol very well like G-dragon but differently.
From “HOT” to “SOLAR”, Evolution of Taeyang
Taeyang had shown as a solo singer by performing another style with Big Bang through his first full album “HOT” on 2008. He showed distinguished performance and outstanding singing ability. His powerful song and performance that overwhelm the audience are good enough to follow Yoo Seung Jun and Rain. In terms of absorbing R&B trend, Taeyang is superior to other solo singers.
Taeyang won two awards “Best R&B” and “Best Soul Song” at Korean Music Awards with “HOT.” Since Taeyang who is an idol singer won two awards in reputable music award, it was significant in music scene. What was so special about it? Contrary to other idol music that have focused on transforming R&B into Korean music, Taeyang’s songs, “Don’t Cheat on Me” and “Hot” showed its original sentiment very well. This would not be easy to YG Entertainment which is a major entertainment in Korea. However, this musical way resulted in accentuating his personality.
This attitude was showed on first album “SOLAR” in earnest. Taeyang is the best singer for absorbing America’s trendy R&B to the YG production team which have pursued African-American music. “Super Star, “I Need A Girl”, “Just A Feeling” and “Take It Slow” in his new album are good example of showing unique African-American music’s characteristic which is sexy and groove. As a result, his album “SOLAR” ranked number two and number one in each of R&B/Soul chart on American and Canadian ITunes.
Taeyang’s true charm comes out from his live-performance. It does not matter whether it is his solo concert or Big Bang’s concert. He have shown outstanding freewheeling performance with elastic motion among five members. He knows how to attract audience. Near the end of the concert, he hummed one of the father of funk, James Brown’s “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine. It means he has a deep affection for American-African music.
Can he develop further “RISE”?
“RINAGA LINGA” released on last year ranked atop on Korean music charts, but it was more like a G-dragon’s music. What is “RISE” like? In the interview when he released “RINGA LINGA”, he said, “In the past, I focused on American-African R&B music, now as my musical interest became wide, I can do more various style of music. There all Ballad, Rock style songs including R&B in new album.” This saying makes us expect to variety of music style of Taeyang.
According to Yang Hyun Suk, the executive producer of YG Entertainment, the new title track “Eyes, Noes, Lips” is a slow R&B song that maximize advantage of Taeyang’s sentimental vocal. It is different compared to the former title tracks focused on dance performance. We can expect that this title track would be sexy like his last song “Take It Slow.” Also, Taeyang participated in compose and writing lyrics of total five songs including “Rise,” “Eyes, Noes, Lips,” “Body,” “Let Go” and “Love You To Death.” Taeyang will show mature masculine beauty through this upcoming album.
Taeyang’s album is meaningful at this point of time because throughout his result, it can affect to Big Bang’s next album.
