Comedian Kim Byung-man from SBS’s Law of the Jungle said he put on 5kg to prepare for his journey to Antarctica.

To commemorate the 300th episode of the show that aired in January, the producers of Law of the Jungle announced that they were preparing Law of the Jungle in Antarctica – a survival project that would take place on Earth’s southernmost continent.

Antarctica boasts a wind chill factor of -60 degrees Celsius, and also the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth at -89.2 degrees. Although a number of different variety shows have attempted to film in Antarctica over the years, none of them ever came to fruition. That makes Law of the Jungle in Antarctica the first Korean variety program to actually go down and film in the Antarctic. The cast for the Antarctic survival project includes “Chief” Kim Byung-man, actress Jeon Hye-bin, and model Kim Young-kwang.

In a poll taken by a research center in Antarctica titled “Which Celebrity Do you Think Could Survive in Antarctica,” Kim Byung-man came in first with an overwhelming number of votes.

On the 2nd, Kim Byung-man told the producers of the show that “it still hasn’t hit [him].” He added, The coldest temperature that I recently experienced was -18 degrees. With it being twice as cold in the Antarctic on average, I can’t even imagine what that’s going to feel like. Since it hasn’t hit me yet, I feel like this is the calm before the storm.”

Kim Byung-man tried to thoroughly ready himself for the journey by watching relevant documentaries. In the pre-recorded interviews for Law of the Jungle, the Chief showed off his abundance of knowledge about the continent of Antarctica, and shared stories about explorers who have been to Antarctica.

In response to a question about whether he had done anything special for the Antarctic survival project, Kim Byung-man replied, I think it’s necessary to have a thick layer of fat to survive. When I heard that I’d be going to Antarctica, I thought it would be better to gain weight than to be slim, so I put on about 5kg.  I’ve worked on my stamina as well, of course.”

Law of the Jungle in Antarctica, which will be airing for the first time on the 13th at 10 p.m., was directed by Kim Jin-ho – the director who has led the series for the longest time. It will be the first variety program on Korean network TV to be televised in UHD (Ultra high definition).
