The Couple of the Century, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo, Announce Divorce Citing ‘Personality Differences’
Actors Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki are reportedly taking legal steps to part ways, with both sides citing personality differences as the reason for their decision to file for divorce.
Song Joong Ki’s management agency, Blossom Entertainment, revealed on June 27 that “Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo have decided to end their marriage after careful consideration, and they are currently taking legal steps for divorce after reaching an amicable settlement.” They added, “We sincerely apologize for delivering such news to the many people who have celebrated and supported their marriage.”
The agency went on to say, “As this has to do with an actor’s private affairs, we ask that you refrain from making rash speculations and spreading false information. Once again, we apologize for not being able to deliver good news.”
Song Joong Ki’s attorney Park Jae Hyun announced via press release that his law firm had “filed for divorce at the Seoul Family Court on June 26 on behalf of Song Joong Ki.” The press release also contained a statement from Song Joong Ki.
The statement read: “First, I would like to apologize for delivering unfortunate news to the many people who love and care for me. I have filed for court mediation for my divorce from Song Hye Kyo. Rather than assigning blame and criticizing one another, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up amicably. I ask for your kind understanding regarding the fact that it would be difficult for me to discuss the details of my personal life. I will recover from my current wounds and do my utmost as an actor to repay you all with great projects in the future.”
Song Hye Kyo also released a statement through her management agency, UAA Korea. Her agency stated that “Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki are in the midst of divorce proceedings after taking careful consideration into the matter.” They added, “The reason [for the divorce] is personality differences. As both sides were unable to overcome these differences, they were forced to make this decision. We ask for your understanding regarding the fact that other specifics cannot be confirmed as this is a matter of both actors’ private affairs. For the sake of both sides, please refrain from publishing sensational reports and making speculative comments.” The agency ended the statement by saying, “We apologize for causing concern. We will strive to be better in the future.”
Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo began dating after meeting through the 2016 KBS2 television drama, Descendents of the Sun, and got married on October 31, 2017.
