SBS’s new Friday-Saturday TV drama, Vagabond, has confirmed a premiere date of September 20.
Vagabond tells the story of a man with ties to a plane crash who delves into a national corruption scandal that he discovers while on the hunt for truth. The drama is a romantic spy thriller about the dangerous and explicit adventures that unfold for a group of “vagabonds” who have no family, affiliation, or even names.
The drama has once again brought together Yoo In Shik – the director who turns every project he touches into a hit, as evidenced by dramas such as Giant, History of a Salaryman, Incarnation of Money, You’re All Surrounded, Mrs. Cop, and Dr. Romantic – and writers Jang Young Chul and Jung Kyung Soon, who also worked on Giant, History of a Salaryman, and Incarnation of Money. The addition of actors Lee Seung Gi, Bae Suzy, Shin Sung Rok, Moon Jeong Hee, Baek Yun Shik, and Moon Sung Keun has raised the profile of the drama.
From the time the actors took part in the table read on June 2, 2018 to the day when filming wrapped on May 23, 2019, Vagabond had a rather lengthy production process that lasted 11 months. The drama is currently awaiting its premiere in September while in post-production, where engineers are immersed in adding the right CG elements and working on color grading in order to ensure the true intention of the scenes, in which the actors poured their hearts and souls, are expressed.
Behind-the-scenes photos of the first table read that took place on June 2 of last year in Sangam-dong, Seoul have drawn a great deal of interest. The photos show the all-star cast, consisting of Lee Seung Gi, Bae Suzy, Shin Sung Rok, Moon Jeong Hee, Baek Yun Shik, Moon Sung Keun, Lee Gyeung Young, Kim Min Jong, Jung Man Sik, Hwang Bo Ra, and Jang Hyeok Jin, who came together for the first time to take part in an intense read-through.
Lee Seung Gi has taken on the role of Cha Dal Gun, a former stuntman who ends up living as a man in pursuit of the truth behind what happened on one fateful day. Seung Gi, who has to oscillate between extreme opposites of emotions while acting as a happy and likable character one minute and taking part in intense action sequences the next, gripped everyone on set by approaching each line of his dialogue with the utmost sincerity.
Suzy plays Go Hae Ri, a covert operative for the National Intelligence Service (NIS) who follows her conscience and goes on a journey to find the truth. Suzy realistically portrays the detailed and fluctuating emotions of a character who transforms as a result of overcoming a crisis and being faced with unthinkable situations. The actress brings a liveliness to the show through her enthusiastic performance that breaks the mold.
Shin Sung Rok plays head of the NIS information team Ki Tae Woong, a workaholic who is highly intelligent and very competent at his job. Ki Tae Woong is a multi-dimensional character who hides his fiery intentions while digging into cases in a level-headed and prudent manner. The actor increases the level of tension in the drama with the masterful way in which he controls the tempo when he acts. Moon Jeong Hee plays Jessica Lee, an arms lobbyist with a secret who has made it to the top after overcoming bias and discrimination. Jeong Hee will leave viewers in awe with her superior acting that puts her at another level, as evidenced by the way in which she can adjust her breath and tone at will.
Baek Yun Shik, who guest stars in the drama as South Korean president Jung Kook Pyo, dominated the set of Vagabond with his distinct aura. Baek Yun Shik doubles the suspense with the unrivaled charisma he displays as the leader of the country who powerfully pushes ahead with his unhindered personality.
A rep from Celltrion Entertainment, the production company behind the drama, said: “The chemistry between the actors, who made the sweeping narrative fit, was amazing. The chemistry on display was so strong that even the producers said they were curious about seeing Vagabond in its completion.” The rep continued, “Vagabond, a drama that overflowed with energy from the first table read for its suspense which will make you hold your breath, and for the chemistry between the actors which will warm your heart, will be premiering soon. We hope that the viewers show a lot of love and interest for the drama.”
