With the announcement of the Oscars shortlists being just around the corner, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is considered to be virtually guaranteed to make a list.

At around 5 a.m. PST (10 p.m. KST) on December 16, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will be announcing the 10 contenders in 9 categories for the 92nd Academy Awards.

The shortlists, through which award hopefuls will find out if they are still in contention for the upcoming Academy Awards, will be released for 9 categories, including Best International Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, and Visual Effects. The final 5 nominees of the 9 categories and the nominees of the remaining categories will be announced on January 13, 2020.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will be taking place next year on February 9 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. In the category for Best International Feature Film – known until this season as the Foreign Language Film award – renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory is expected to face off against Parasite.

As of late, Parasite has been dominating prominent awards ceremonies in the US. The film was named as a nominee for the Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language award for the Golden Globes, which is considered to be one of the top two awards shows for television and film in the US, along with the Oscars. The film picked up multiple awards at the Chicago, Los Angeles, and Southeastern Film Critics Association Awards. The attention has now turned to the Academy Awards to see how many categories Parasite will find itself in when the final nominees are announced on January 13. The film is currently being talked about as a strong candidate to be nominated for Best International Feature, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

According to American awards prediction and entertainment news website Gold Derby, Parasite is ranked No. 3 or 4 in the predictions for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. For the Best Picture award, the website gives Parasite a 10.4% chance to win the award, putting it in fourth place behind The Irishman (12.9%), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (11.5%), and Marriage Story (10.7%). This figure represents a more than 2% jump from the prediction at the beginning of November, when the film was given an 8% chance to win. Director Bong’s chance to win the award for Best Director is currently at 17.6%, putting him in third behind The Irishman’s Martin Scorsese (21.8%) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Quentin Tarantino (19.4%). The site currently gives Parasite an 18.1% chance to win the Best Original Screenplay award, putting it at No. 3 behind Marriage Story and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

IMDb predicts that Parasite will likely pick up Oscar nominations for 6 categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Film Editing, and Best Production Design. Parasite has a rating of 8.6 on IMDb, which is higher than its ratings for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (7.8), The Irishman (8.2), and Marriage Story (8.3).
