Screen captures from the 2019 MBC Entertainment Awards

Comedienne Park Na Rae was honored with the Daesang (grand prize) at the 2019 MBC Entertainment Awards.

The ceremony, which was emceed by Jeon Hyun Moo, Hwasa, and P.O, took place on December 29 at the MBC Public Hall in Sangam-dong, Seoul.

Other nominees for the Daesang included Lee Young Ja, Yu Jae Seok, Kim Gu Ra, Jeon Hyun Moo, and Kim Seong Joo. All of the nominees were presented with the Entertainer of the Year award. After being announced as one of the nominees of the Daesang, Lee Young Ja elicited laughter from everyone by saying, “I know I’m just filler. I’m a folding screen for MBC this year.”

Park Na Rae took home the Daesang for her contributions on I Live Alone and Where Is My Home. “Truthfully, I didn’t think this award was mine, but I really wanted it. I’m human too,” said Na Rae while holding back tears. “But I was nominated today along with amazing comedians who I respect. I really wanted to win the award right before I was announced as a nominee, but then Lee Young Ja told me to square my shoulders and be confident. Jae Seok also told me that he hoped that I would win the Daesang. Gu Ra told me that everything would be okay. I’m so inadequate compared to these people, and I wondered if I’d be able to speak at ease like them if I were nominated for the Daesang. I’m a person who is lacking in so many ways,” she continued tearfully.

“I’m 148cm tall. That’s really short, isn’t it? But now that I’m looking from up here, I can see the tops of people’s heads for the first time. I’ve never once thought that I was up high or above someone else. I can see up to your chin. It made me so happy to look up to everyone. I’m so thankful for my family at JDB. Thank you to the producers of Where Is My Home and I Live Alone. Because you were the sky, we were able to become airplanes,” said Na Rae.

She also didn’t forget to thank her family and said, “Mom, I won an award.” She continued, “It’s wonderful to see people I’ve hung out with, like my friend, Do Yeon the giant, Se Hyeong, and Sae Ho, here at this sparkling ceremony. I’d like to see more of my junior comedians coming to awards ceremonies. I’m actually not a nice person. But as Park Na Rae the entertainer, I’ll do my best to deliver wholesome laughs.” Na Rae finished off her acceptance speech by making everyone laugh when she did the “elephant spin,” which was required of all the winners.

The awards ceremony was filled with a variety of trendy presenters. Copychu and Yoo Byung Jae, webtoonists Lee Mal Nyeon and Joo Ho Min, and Pengsu brought a fresh vibe to the show, and Jang Do Yeon’s wit shined when she was on stage with Zico. Do Yeon took home the Best Entertainer award. “This is the first time I was invited to the MBC Entertainment Awards. This is my first award from one of the three major television networks. It’s actually taken me 13 years to climb up the five steps to this awards stage,” said Do Yeon during her moving acceptance speech.

Some of the most touching moments of the evening came when comediennes who have been active in the industry for decades were recognized for their work. “I was intimidated because I thought I wasn’t fit for TV, which made me afraid of going on TV.  I’m so thankful for Song Eun Yi and Kim Sook, who extended a hand to me, raised me, and made me into a human being,” said a tearful Ahn Young Mi as she bowed deeply to the audience. Kim Sook and Song Eun Yi, who both worked with Ahn Young Mi as a part of the group Celeb Five, won the awards for Top Excellence in Music & Talk and Top Excellence in Variety, respectively. “This is my first time coming to an awards ceremony in 25 years. Now I know how Song Eun Yi felt last year. Thank you so much,” said Kim Sook in tears as she accepted her award.

The Rookie Award for Radio went to Kim Eana and Jang Sung Kyu. The Rookie Award for Variety was presented to Hong Hyun Hee, Jang Sung Kyu, and Yu San Seul. Hong Hyun Hee was deeply moved by receiving her first rookie award 12 years after her debut, and Jang Sung Kyu was honored with two awards. Yu San Seul – Yu Jae Seok’s trot music singing alter ego who has been one of the most active characters on MBC this year – made the audience laugh by saying, “This is my first time winning a rookie award in the 29 years since my debut. Mr. San Seul, congratulations.”
