Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite has nabbed the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

On February 10 (Korean time), the 92nd Academy Awards opened at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

The nominees for Best Original Screenplay included Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won (Parasite), Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917), Rian Johnson (Knives Out), Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), and Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood). Parasite is the first non-English language film in 17 years to win the award since Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar took home the award in 2003 for Talk to Her, and is also the first Asian film in the history of the Oscars to win for Best Original Screenplay.

“I thank my wife for always being an inspiration to me. I thank all the actors who are here with me today for bringing this film to life. Thank you,” said Bong during his acceptance speech.

Hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Awards are the most esteemed awards ceremony for film in the US. TV Chosun is exclusively broadcasting the ceremony live for Korean audiences, with film critic Lee Dong Jin and interpreter/VJ Ahn Hyun Mo hosting the broadcast.
