EXO’s Chen Draws the Ire of Fans by Announcing Birth of Daughter 3 Months After Wedding Announcement
Just three months after revealing to the world that he would soon be tying the knot, EXO member Chen announced that he had become the father of a newborn baby girl. Instead of congratulating the idol star, many of the group’s fans have expressed their anger over the news.
The news was announced on April 29 by EXO’s label, SM Entertainment, who revealed that “Chen [had] become the father of a baby girl.” Chen’s wife gave birth to the couple’s daughter at a hospital in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul on the 29th, making Chen the first member of the group to get married and become a father.
In January of this year, the singer posted a message to a fan cafe announcing his upcoming nuptials and pregnancy of his then-girlfriend. The message read: “I have a girlfriend who I want to spend the rest of my life with. A blessing has come into my life. I was really taken by surprise, but the blessing has helped me to muster up my courage.” SM Entertainment also issued a statement at the time, which read: “Chen has met someone precious to him, and he will be getting married. The wedding will be held privately, with only the family members of both sides in attendance. In accordance with the families’ wishes, the ceremony itself and all matters related to the wedding will be kept private.”
Although a number of EXO’s fans did express their congratulations for Chen, many fans found it difficult to accept the sudden wedding and pregnancy news. Some fans had felt that Chen had “inflicted harm” on the group. When additional reports were published, revealing that “Chen and his fiancee [had] already gotten married in a quiet wedding ceremony at a cathedral” and that “Chen’s wife [was] already seven months pregnant,” the fans’ outrage hit fever pitch. Although SM denied the rumors, fans grew more suspicious by the day.
The fans held a rally to demand Chen’s removal from the group and even went as far as posting their demands on social media and bus advertisements. SM Entertainment released a statement saying there would be no change to EXO’s member lineup, and Chen posted an apology message to his fans a month after announcing his marriage plans.
However, with news of his daughter being born coming out a mere three months after the wedding announcement was made, the voices calling for Chen’s removal have grown even louder. Although SM has tried to explain that the baby had come a little earlier than expected, the fans’ anger has not been subsiding. More fans have started to believe that the reports of Chen’s wife already being seven months pregnant a few months back were in fact true, and the popular opinion is that Chen and SM have been lying to the fans.
Chen, who is currently 27 years old, debuted as a member of EXO in 2012. He was also one third of the sub-unit EXO-CBX. In April 2019, he released his first solo album titled April, and a Flower, led by the title track “Beautiful Goodbye.” In October of the same year, Chen released his second solo album, Dear My Dear.
