BLACKPINK and BTS have made K-pop history once again.

At the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards that were held on August 30 (local time), BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to receive one of the coveted Moon Person trophies. The impressive accomplishment comes one year after the group first made its presence known in the US music market.

BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” was selected as the Song of the Summer, beating out hit songs such as Cardi B’s “WAP,” DJ Khaled’s “POPSTAR,” and Dua Lipa’s “Break My Heart.” BLACKPINK is also the first Asian girl group to win the Song of the Summer category.

BTS was nominated in four categories – Best Pop, Best K-pop, Best Choreography, and Best Group – for the song “ON,” the title track off their fourth studio album, Map of the Soul: 7, and the group went on to sweep all four awards.

After being announced as the winners of the Best Group and Best K-pop categories for the second year in a row, BTS exclaimed, “Shout out to the ARMY and MTV for giving us this award two years in a row. We will keep trying to make music that can comfort you.”

This was the first year that BTS was nominated in the Best Pop category. The members made certain to thank their fans during their acceptance speech for the award, in which they said, “We are truly honored and we wanted to give the credit to our fans, ARMY, for supporting us and relating to our music.”

BTS also presented their first performance of their new all-English single, “Dynamite,” in a pre-recorded performance that was filmed in Korea.

The members gave a delightful and upbeat performance while donning suits that made them look like the leading men of classic Hollywood films. In the background, images of the Manhattan Bridge, Times Square, and the New York City skyline popped up as the group were showing off their flashy dance moves.

During the song’s climax, the background opened to slowly reveal the night view of the Han River in Seoul and fireworks exploding in the sky.

This marked BTS’s first appearance and performance at the MTV VMAs. Major media outlets from all over the world are predicting that BTS will get their first Billboard Hot 100 topper with their newest single, “Dynamite.”
