Actor Jo Byeong Gyu has revealed that he dropped a significant amount of weight for his new role.
On November 27, the production press conference for the new OCN drama, The Uncanny Counter, was streamed live. The Uncanny Counter is a thriller that tells a story of a team of “Counters” who hunt evil spirits while disguising themselves as employees at a noodle shop.
Jo Byeong Gyu plays the role of So Mun, a good-hearted Counter-in-training who is immensely talented and a quick learner. Jo described So Mun as a character who “was living with trauma after losing his parents to an unexpected accident, but then gradually develops after earning supernatural powers.”
For Jo Byeong Gyu, this is his first leading role. “I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel any pressure. I really leaned on the other actors. I think that the four Counters are all main characters,” he said.
Jo also lost weight for the drama’s action sequences. “The director said, ‘Yu Jun Sang is losing weight, so you should too.’ After hearing that, I dropped 10 kg. I currently weigh 55.7 kg, and on days when I do a lot of action scenes, I go down to 54.8 kg. I’m staying in shape while taking a number of supplements like omega-3 and milk thistle,” Jo revealed.
Jo also shared, “At first, I wasn’t used to doing wire-flying work, and it felt awkward, but I was able to be at ease because the crew prepared everything safely. There are times now when I feel more comfortable in the sky than on land.”
The first episode of The Uncanny Counter aired at 10:30 p.m. on November 28.
